Is there a source for this: “AI is used to select which part of the image is best as a preview (for max engagement)”? This is in the Twitter image preview section. I didn’t realize this was a thing and I’d love to learn more about how it works.

It's just a well-known thing. As mentioned in the papers- the algorithms employed saliency cropping (where they try to identify the most important bit). It's not hard to imagine that importance in social media will be conflated with engagement (since it matches both business sense and is easier to measure)

I know a lot of the algorithms for socials were created to optimize engagement but I didn't realize image cropping had so much thought put into it. Found it here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1801.05787
